THE JANICK GERS GUITAR CLINIC VIDEO!
The Man Who Ruined Maiden Teaches The Tykes How
To Hit The Strings With The Cord
Now that he's been largely replaced by the triumphantly-
retuning Adrian Smith, one might wonder how Iron Maiden's Janick
Gers is killing time these days.
One need wonder no more. In July, Herr Gers will have in
stores his very own guitar clinic video.
"I'm quite proud of it, actually," Janick stated in a
bizzare cross between a German and a British accent. "When I
was in Gillan back around '82, I actually played guitar quite
well which went a long way to making Magic the great album
that it was. When I joined Maiden in '90, though, I decided
that there were too many good guitarists out there, and that I
should try to seperate myself from the pack. So, instead of
playing solid rhythm and lead sections like my predecessor
Adrian did, I just stood around, acted like a clown and hit
the strings with my chord. Dave is simply one hell of a
player, why should I have to do any work with him out there?"
In a sneak preview of the video for Cut Out Bin editors,
Janick puts on, well, nothing less than a clinic on the best
ways to be a court jester instead of a guitar player. He
opens the video by playing part of Dream Theater's "Erotomania,"
then stops and says, "I'm a good guitarist, so are you, but why
fucking bother?" and starts into his usual routine.

He was good in Gillan... (sniff)
Throughout the interview, this writer found Janick Gers to
be extememly personable and easy to get along with, which
probably explains his ten year tenure (no pun intended, but what
the fuck...) with Iron Maiden. "Nobody's going to put up with
a lousy musician who's also an asshole," Janick remarked. "But
nice guys are harder to get rid of, even if they suck. To be
quite honest, being fun to be around is the only reason I've
been in Iron Maiden for fully half of its big-label existance."
The DVD version of The Janick Gers Guitar Clinic Video
will feature some live clips where you can switch back and
forth between Maiden classics as heard on Live After Death
with Adrian Smith, and the same song as heard on A Real Dead
One with Janick Gers.
"The songs with Adrian are much better," Janick said.
"But watching me out there is just so much more fun!"
